Irrational use of Antibiotics. Surgery Service, Rundu. June-September 2023.
(1 hora 30 minutos)
Abstract:
Introduction: The use of antibiotics into clinical practice was one of the most important interventions for the control of infectious diseases. These have saved millions of lives, and have also represented a revolution in medicine. Inappropriate use represents a serious public health problem due to the increase in resistance generated in microorganisms. Its objective was to analyze the consumption and rational use of antibiotics. Material and method: Observational and retrospective study that collects antibacterial prescriptions for systemic use dispensed in the surgery room based on prescription cards in hospitalized patients from June to September 2023. Results: There were a total of 379 patients, of which 41.95% were male and 58.05% female. Most of the patients hospitalized in the surgery department were between 30 and 45 years old. No fatal drug interactions were found in the patients' prescriptions. Antibiotic prescription was considered optimal with 92% correct dosage and 97% correct indications for the prescribed antibiotic. Conclusion: The rational use of antibiotics includes multidisciplinary intervention between the doctor, pharmacist, nursing and other health professionals, to improve the quality of the prescription, avoiding: unnecessary prescription, inappropriate selection of treatment, self-medication and lack of adherence to the drug treatment by consumers.
Keywords: Antibiotic resistance, rational use of antimicrobials.
